Exploring The Indianapolis Canal Walk

Indianapolis, the State capital of Indiana is a city of numerous attractions, but for those in the now one of the most relaxing of these attractions is the Indianapolis Canal Walk – which underwent a significant refurbishment in 2001.

However, it is not only relaxation that draws people to the Indianapolis Canal Walk – it is the perfect place for joggers to enjoy one of the most scenic ways to get some cardio-focused exercise. Bikers are also drawn to the walk, which runs north through White River State Park to 11th Street. The canal itself is a pleasure to navigate in one of the pedal boats that are available for hire near the Indiana State Museum. There are also various models of bikes that can be hired – Wheel Fun Rentals at 801 West Washington Street is extremely popular.

The three-mile loop is also a favorite with visitors to the city, not only is it picturesque, but it is also one of the easiest (and most pleasant) ways to access some of the city’s most famous attractions, as well as a wealth of entertainment and dining destinations.

One of the most popular attractions close by the canal is the Indiana State Museum. The Eiteljorg Museum is also in close proximity – and for those interested in art and artifacts from all over the world this museum is well worth a visit (its collections of Native American artifacts are tremendously impressive).

Families enjoying the scenic canal Walk should set aside some time to enjoy the wonders of the Indianapolis Zoo. The zoo is dedicated to furthering the aims of global conservation and provides both young and old with a fascinating insight into the natural world. Many of the permanent exhibits showcase fauna from biomes all over the world such as desert environments, forests and jungles.

During the summer many families take in the delights of the canal – and stop off for a picnic at the White River State Park which boasts some exceptional lawns.

Canal Walk has some exceptional dining venues, but for comfort food of the very best quality visit Burgerhaus. The Father and Son team at this great venue have taken the burger to new heights. Try the Monaco for something a little different. White Cheddar, sauteed onions and mushrooms, avo, arugula, and wine mayo. Indulge in a side of mac and cheese.

The Indianapolis Canal Walk offers a mix of cultural attractions, scenic beauty and entertainment – a walk along it is a relaxing way to get to know this great city.
